History of Changes

To upgrade to the newest version, simply download SmartGo and install it.

  • Free Viewer: When your 15-day free trial period expires, SmartGo now turns into a Viewer: Features like Save and Print are disabled, and the size of the library is restricted, but you can continue to freely use SmartGo as a viewer.
  • Windows Vista: SmartGo has been tested to install and run well on Vista.
  • Smaller download: The download size has been reduced from 17 MB to 12 MB, making it even easier to update to the newest version.
  • Faster startup: SmartGo 2.6 launches significantly faster than previous versions.
  • More Options: Tools > Special > More Options provides convenient access to some settings that were not exposed earlier.

New Features

  • Predefined game filters: A number of predefined filters make it even easier to find specific games: Games with komi, handicap games, half-point wins, or early resignations. And just name any filter you define yourself and it will show up in the menu for easy access later.
  • Alt-click enhanced: SmartGo has always made it easy to go directly to a move: Just hold down the Alt key and click to go to a particular move. In this release, we've gone a step further: press Alt and SmartGo shows you all the moves, making it much easier to find the move you want. Or hold down Alt just to see the sequence of moves that you're in. Try it once, and you'll never want to go back to the old version.
  • Copy as ASCII: Choose Edit > Copy as ASCII (Ctrl-Shift-C) to copy the current position as text for inclusion in email, discussion groups, or Sensei's Library. More...
  • Polish translation: Thanks to Piotr Lewczuk, the SmartGo user interface is now available in Polish. Just choose Help > Polish and SmartGo switches languages on the fly. (If you'd like to translate SmartGo to your language, please let us know.)

  • Guess next move: This cool feature now keeps track of your statistics and tells you when you're in the right area, or when you found a good move but your timing is off. Choose Replay > Guess Next Move to try out this major enhancement. More...
  • Game length: SmartGo now keeps the number of moves in each game up-to-date, so you can use that to sort and filter games in the library. Right-click on the games list header to add that column.
  • Various refinements: We continue to fine-tune the feature set and usability of SmartGo. For example, we've added Delete This Branch and Make Main Branch to speed up editing, complete with shortcut keys. Just play a sequence of moves, then use Shift-Delete to remove that sequence and restore your position.
  • 45000 professional games: Including 1516 games played in 2006.
  • Improved computer play: Significant improvements in various areas. For example, ko fights are now handled much better.

  • Show more data about matching positions: SmartGo now shows winning percentage and years played when matching positions. Turn on View > Show Diagram Caption to see that information below the board.
  • Mark longest moves: Automatically find the 10 moves that took the longest time, so you can zero in on the difficult moves and review them. Choose Edit > Advanced > Mark Longest Moves. (This works for games that have timing information, such as those played on a Go server.)

  • Russian: Thanks to Dmitri Ustinov for translating SmartGo to Russian!
  • Filter library games: When you filter games on the Library tab (e.g. limiting them to a specific player), the statistics for joseki matching are also limited to the filtered games.
  • Observed games marked: Observed games are now marked, and the right-click menu can be used to unobserve games. Switching between observed games always goes to the end of the game.
  • Delete finished games: Finished IGS games can be deleted using the right-click menu.
  • Duplicate games: SmartGo now recognizes duplicate games that are rotated or mirrored.
  • Resignation statistics: Did you know that over 60% of Kato Masao's wins were resignations? But only 27% of Takagawa Kaku's wins? You can add that column to the player list.
  • Joseki shortcut: Ctrl-J now shows joseki without bringing up the toolbar.

Fixed Issues

  • Stone drawing: The shaded stones issue has been fixed, as has a BitBlt issue after locking the screen.
  • Mouse wheel direction: In response to user feedback, the direction of the mouse wheel has been reversed. Please contact us if it now feels wrong to you, and we may add an option setting for it.

Version 2.0 (2006-01-24)

The first multi-lingual version of SmartGo is released in English, Japanese, and Korean simultaneously, with countless improvements:

  • IGS support: Click on the IGS tab and connect to observe and play games on IGS.
  • Problem collection: Over 2000 problems at all levels, from 30 kyu to 6 dan.
  • Better organized UI: The tabs organize your activities as well as your games. Add your own tabs for your own collections of games.
  • Better looking UI: Colored tabs, antialiased icons, and (finally) better-looking stones.
  • List of players: Check out statistics for each player in the Library tab.

And lots of other changes such as filtering games, reading games in UGF format, user-definable tags in game info, automatic portrait layout, comment cleanup, and support for different Go rules.
